Legend of the Prince of Denmark
For flute, clarinet, and piano
Written for a composition workshop, this piece depicts Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with each instrument being a character – the piano depicts Hamlet, the flute depicts Ophelia, and the clarinet depicts Claudius.
The music depicts both the story arc and characters. From a harsh opening that immediately introduces the tone, to a sweet section about Hamlet and Ophelia’s love, then disrupted by the events of the story, eventually a pseudo-marche funèbre section, ending in Hamlet’s death.
